Placing North at the top of world maps is an arbitrary cultural convention. Medieval Christian T-O maps placed East (the Garden of Eden) at the top (*orient* = East); medieval Islamic cartographers (Al-Idrisi) placed South at the top; ancient Chinese maps oriented toward the Emperor in the North.
