Psychologist Barbara Tversky demonstrated that human cognitive maps do not store spatial data like bitmap images, but as hierarchically organized categorical heuristics. People systematically misjudge that Rome is south of New York (it is north) or that San Diego is west of Reno (Reno is further west).
